I Love The OG Legacy Story Of Moonshot ❤️
Oh my goodness......I love this book!!!!! 😂
And possibly not for the reasons you might think!!!!
I recently went back and unarchived the original version of Summer Rain and the Moonshot Academy for Gifted Teenagers.... a book series created years ago.... and there are absolutely places where I now think:
Ohhhh man... that needs some serious help lol! 😂
And....yes.....there are definitely things I would do differently today.....
things I would explain differently.....
things I would probably take out completely....
And an entire fictional universe that, years later, I can now see becoming something much bigger than when I first imagined it.
But yet?
OMG I STILL LOVE IT!!!!! ❤️
But none of this is actually what I love most........
What I really loved was making something for my daughter, even though she was much too little for it at the time. The book was made with love, and I love that!!!! I really....really...do! ❤️ ❤️❤️
Moonshot was one of the first full-production book series I ever created and produced, and would go on to give me the courage to make my sons series of books too....but before all of that...and way before Choose A Life You Love that you see here today....there was the story universe of Moonshot. 🌙
It wasn't simply an idea sitting in a notebook.
I invested real money into developing it, working with editors, designers, illustrators, and other creative people to help turn this simple idea from my head into an actual series of fiction novels (and NFT cards and all kinds of other stuff at the time lol!)
And I made it for my daughter...did I say that?
I wanted to create something that could sit on her shelf until one day..... if ever she wanted to.... she could pick it up and read it.
Have you ever made something like that for one of your kids? In fact....do you just make stuff for your kids in general?
I know I make stuff for my kids allllllll the time lol!
I've done it since they were babies!
A lot of the time they don't use it, or I make it too far ahead for the development stage that they are currently in...but I still love knowing that if ever they need it, I have put real care and thought into making it with love (always!!) ❤️
Anyway.....
So What Even Is Moonshot?
At its heart, Moonshot is a completely fictional story about a teenage girl named Summer Rain who is offered an extraordinary opportunity.
Summer Rain is invited to the Moonshot Academy for Gifted Teenagers.
And the offer is ridiculous.
$12 million dollars for a 12 year internship.
Because this is fiction right...and yet at the same time....when we understand IP and licensing and compounding etc, $12 million for 12 years at prime creative development time isn't such a far fetched idea! 😂
Creating the world of Moonshot gave me an opportunity to create a world in which everything is enormous.
The money could be enormous.
The opportunities could be enormous.
The business lessons could be enormous.
And by making everything bigger than ordinary life, I could explore some very ordinary questions.
What is your work worth?
What happens when somebody else sees value in something you've created? But you yourself have no idea what it's true value is?
Who owns an idea? <I'll save this one for a later book, because I went through it in real life!!>
What does a contract actually mean?
What's the difference between earning money and building something valuable?
What happens if somebody offers you an enormous amount of money today for something that might be worth much more tomorrow?
And perhaps most importantly:
What would you choose .....if you got the letter?
Why I Chose Business
When I was young, probably the closest thing I had to entrepreneurial fiction written for girls was The Baby-Sitters Club.
And man, I loved those books.
The club.
The meetings.
The clients.
The jobs.
The girls organising themselves and making their own money.
I didn't think of it as “entrepreneurial education” at the time.
I just thought it was brilliant. 😂
But when I became a mum, I realised how many things about money and business I had reached adulthood without really understanding.
Intellectual property.
Contracts.
Ownership.
Investing.
Different ways of generating income.
The difference between selling your work and owning your work.
The idea that something you create might become an asset.
The possibility that your creativity itself might have economic value.
I didn't want to write my daughter a textbook about any of that....and yet I truly believed back then...as much I believe here today....that those things are incredibly important.
And I also understand how many girls will eventually grow into women...
who may or may not have children one day....
and who may or may not need to know how to bounce a baby on their knee and also make money at the same time.
So I really wanted to create a story, with just enough learning in there....that if the book sat on her shelf for 5 years or 10 years or 20 or 50, the concept would still hold....yet still age appropriate enough to read...or take to a teacher or trusted adult and ask: is this true? Would this work? Could you help me make my own moonshot project if I wanted?
And That's Where The Moonshot Framework Came From
The Moonshot Academy gives you a fictional playground where those ideas can become part of the adventure, and they can also be used in classes like Agile Learning etc as a low cost framework to open up discussions with trusted adults and teenagers alike.
Instead of explaining intellectual property, I could give Summer something she had created and allow her to decide what to do with it.
Instead of explaining valuation, I could create a world where her work was assigned value.
Instead of lecturing about contracts, I could put a contract in front of her.
Instead of telling her that there are different ways to make money, I could build the possibilities into the Academy.
And instead of telling her what the “right” decision was, I could let Summer make choices.....
That was the framework.
And because it was fiction, I could make the whole thing gloriously unrealistic.
Moonshot Academy isn't real....Please lets be 100% truthful about this. If anyone searches Google or wants to know, please let it be stated clearly: The Moonshot Academy and Summer Rain is a completely fictional universe.
The $12 million opportunity isn't real.
Summer Rain isn't real~ though in 2026 my entire own Moonshot Portfolio was published under the Pen Name Summer Rain to keep everything grouped together and easy to find for anyone who wanted to see what I was making.
The financial structures, Moonshot Academy, opportunities and events belong to a completely fictional universe.
It was never intended to be a blueprint for how teenagers should actually live or invest their money.
It was written as a fictional story to open up discussions.
A rather enormous one. 😂
And Now I Can See It Differently
This might be the part I love most.
I can read the original Moonshot today and simultaneously think:
I would change that.
and
OMG I LOVE THAT!!!!
Those two things don't cancel each other out.
In fact, I'm beginning to think that's one of the lovely things about keeping old creative work.
It shows us what we knew then.....
What interested us.....
What we were trying to understand......
What we thought mattered.
And occasionally, hidden underneath all the bits we'd now change, we find an idea we still completely love.
That's what happened when I opened Moonshot again.
I found the beginning of a world still waiting to be explored.
The original books are going to be released and stay exactly the way they are:
As The Legacy Editions.
But the new Moonshot I create from here will become something else.
But before we go anywhere new, I wanted to put the original back on the shelf.
